Born in the Sands
Renowned couldn't begin to describe the legacy of Mariam and Dewey Warnstaff. Living in random camps, the two adventurers were legendary archeologists. Known in the community for their ancient findings, their faces were plastered all over journals, textbooks, and museums.
Born into a porcelain bath tub contaminated with sand, Joaquin made his grand debut. Both the Warnstaff's took time away from the archeology world to help raise their new baby boy. Joaquin has a generally easy upbringing, full of travel and excitement. Once he was old enough, his parents returned to their full time jobs of relic hunting.
Joaquin aspired to be like his parents. He noticed all the attention they got from many people around the world. Little Joaquin wanted to make something of himself. With a trusty delvers cap, he accompanied his parents on all of the archeological digs. He spent many hours researching ancient communities, piecing together puzzles no one else could complete.
As Joaquin entered his teenage years, he was dawned with his handy dandy shovel. This shovel, was pretty much a generic shovel, but it was Joaquin's and it was special to him. He engraved his name into the handle, claiming it as his. With the new found equipment his parents taught him how to carefully dig for relics beneath the earth.
Wing Sprouting
Entering his young adulthood, Joaquin was determined to make his first archeological break by himself. He took off from southern Uldum, where his parents resided. Traveling north, there were several locations that spoke to him. Areas where the sands spoke to him, as if something was calling out to him.
Joaquin needed to figure out who was calling to him before he could dig. An ancient library sat across the oceans, one of which was secluded but available only to a select group of people. No one knew of Joaquin, but he didn't want to be lost to time.
Taking a fair amount of gold with him, Joaquin launched a voyage across the seas. However, he was a one man crew wishing to sail the seas. Once he departed the docks in Uldum, it would be a good three days until he came across Drustvar.
The ocean's wave quickly became unpredictable. The ship rocked in ways that would make even the most fearsome sealegs anxious. Joaquin had little control over where the boat would go. The rutters couldn't guide the boat through the waters. The only thing Joaquin could do is remain hopeful that the sails hold up.
Once through the storm, Joaquin was surprised his boat didn't capsize. He didn't know how to swim, nor was he itching to find out quickly. He spotted land, the trees of Drustvar were dark red, just as the tales foretold.
At the dock, Joaquin left the boat. Walking through the port, he found the people of Drustvar to not be the nicest folks. The large sack of gold he carried with him made a significant amount of noise with each step, drawing in pickpockets. Joaquin, being young and oblivious at the time, noticed many moments too late that his gold had been looted. Joaquin did not let this minor setback get to him. He pushed onwards.
Coming up to the Eventide Library, he found that there were no guards protecting the library and it's contents. However, Joaquin found that the door to the library was locked. He checked other doors around the facility and they too were locked. He came across a young woman wandering around outside, holding a keyring attempting to get back into the library. He stopped her and questioned her, stating who he was. Unfortunate for Joaquin, this woman had no idea who he was. She would have let him in if he could make a donation to the Library.
Joaquin groaned, realizing that he had no means of getting into the library, not without breaking in. He didn't want to dhe barred from one of the largest libraries the lands had to offer. He walked back to the port, looking up at his battered boat. He saw a group of men standing around a small card table. Two men were playing a round of Hearthstone. Joaquin inquired with one of the bystanders, getting some info on how it works.
Once one of the men won, Joaquin grew bold. He stepped forward through the crowd and offered to play the winner, wagering his boat as collateral. Joaquin had a vague understanding of the game but wanted to make enough money to enter the library and leave. Joaquin quickly lost the match, in turn losing his boat. However, the man who won realized how unskilled Joaquin was. Once the crowd dissipated, the man approached Joaquin, offering to teach him the game of Hearthstone.
Thaddius's Sham
The man introduced himself to Joaquin as Thaddius. He was an older man who played Hearthstone in the streets to afford for his bills. Thaddius sat down with Joaquin and showed him the basics. Once Joaquin understood how the game actually worked, Thaddius began to show him how he could make money playing Hearthstone.
Always bring two decks, one for yourself and one for your opponent. Taunting and playful banter are your keys for drawing in oblivious players. Make bets you aren't willing to lose, not an entire boat. Read the room, read your environment, read your opponent. Thaddius handed Joaquin two decks. A normal deck and a loaded deck. The loaded deck was set up to guarantee he would win, even if shuffled. Certain cards had modified mana values, effects, and attack/defense stats to ensure victory. Most people had basic understandings of hearthstone. The most important rule to understand is never make bets on games that you didn't initiate.
With that said, Thaddius played a few games with Joaquin to show him how the loaded deck worked. The tide of the game gave the illusion of Joaquin's opponent to win, but within the last 3-4 turns the tables would turn in Joaquin's favor. This excited him.
With a small loan from Thaddius, Joaquin went on to play random strangers in the street. Making small inconspicuous bets, nothing that would make someone angry if lost. Joaquin spent the next few days playing in random alleys, rebuilding his lost gold. Joaquin even won his prized snow leopard patterned hat.
Joaquin came across a group of kids who were carrying around a large sack of gold, the sack was made from the same material that Joaquin's was. He knew this was his gold and these kids were the ones who stole from him. With his new found skills Joaquin challenged them, betting his boat in exchange for the sack of gold.
What felt like an eternity, the high stress game came to a close. Joaquin had won his gold back from the kids, or so he thought. The kids quickly stood up and tried running off with the gold, only to be stopped by Thaddius standing directly behind them. Scared, they dropped the gold and ran.
Joaquin thanked Thaddius and gave him his loan back plus interest.
Pricelessness
Joaquin returned to the Eventide Library with his gold. He found the same woman as before and dropped his gold sack in her hands. The woman patiently counted out the gold and told Joaquin that he did not have enough gold to meet the minimum Library donation.
Joaquin stayed level headed and thought quickly. He read the woman who stood before him, she made assumptions that she had lived a secular lifestyle for so long, however her shaky voice revealed she was looking for a way out. Joaquin, putting on a more confident voice, offered to take her out on a ride on his boat, no strings attached. The woman seemed interested and took him up on the offer. Later that night the woman met with Joaquin on the boat and the two of them set sail around the island. Laying on the deck, checking out the stars at night, Joaquin even set up some small candles around the boat, it was truly a romantic get up.
Joaquin talked for hours with this woman, telling tales of his time in Uldum. How he managed to uncover numerous time lost relics and bring more clarity to history. How he fought off saurlisks within the desert to protect both himself and the others at his archeological sites. The woman was captivated by Joaquin's tales.
After their night came to a conclusion, Joaquin made another appearance at the Library. This time, the woman let Joaquin into the Library, giving him access to the archives.
Korai's Revenge
With the information Joaquin discovered in the Library, he was able to piece together the ancients that lived in northern Uldum years prior. Joaquin took his boat and began his trek back to Uldum. Thankfully, the seas were less abrasive compared to his last voyage.
Returning home, he made his way up to the dig site. Setting up the camp by himself, he took his shovel and began to dig, clearing way for what he thought was below. However, Joaquin ended up digging and digging, getting no where. It was almost as if he was wrong. After nonstop digging, he paused to review his notes. Everything he recorded was accurate.
He tried digging for one more day. His shovel hit a hard stone under the sand. Getting excited, Joaquin tore through the sand and discovered a small cellar door, preserved by the lack of air under the sand. He slowly opened it, giving light to the interior of the small room inside.
Joaquin grabbed a torch and descended the stairs into the cellar. There was an old humanoid sized bird skeleton slumped in the corner of the room. Joaquin found that to be strange, next to the body was an old tome with writing in a language he couldn't decipher. Picking up the tome he dusted it off and opened it up.
A large feather fell from the book and stuck to Joaquin's arm. He found this to be odd, how the feather defied gravity. Within moments, his body wretched, his bones snapping and his muscles tearing. He screamed out in agony but no one could hear him as he chose to do this dig by himself.
He fell to the ground. After a few moments, everything felt normal. His muscles ached but he wasn't dead. He looked down at his hands, realizing they were now clawed with soft pads. He noticed his legs were thin, feathered, and digitigrade. Joaquin began to panic. He stood up and ran out into the desert, letting out a loud caw.
Joaquin looked down at the book, the indecipherable text was now legible to him. The book was that of the Korai, a lost Arakkoan race of shapeshifters. Scribbled notes in the book dictated that the race was extinct but a curse was placed within the pages of the book. Whomever opened it would receive the Korai Blessing, reigniting the race from the ashes.
Joaquin sighed.
